Doug McCallum announced this morning he’s running with four council candidates in his bid to regain the mayor’s chair.
They include Surrey Now newspaper editor Beau Simpson – who is on leave from the paper to run for council – lawyer Justin Thind, business owner Rina Gill and community advocate Laurie Guerra. (Information about the candidates can be found at www.safesurrey.ca)
Even some of McCallum’s detractors say the news is big for him.
On the plus side, he’s got four new faces with some community profile. None of them have been in office, so shouldn’t have that many skeletons in the closet.
On the downside, none of them have previous political experience.
They will be taking McCallum’s lead politically.
McCallum does have political experience and know how. He is extremely adept at spinning populist views which will be welcome among visceral voters.
He also has political baggage.
The new team — Safe Surrey Coalition — will all wear that because they’re part of the team.
Look for Coun. Barinder Rasode to officially throw her hat in the mayoral ring a week Saturday. I’m told it will be an announcement like no other.
Surrey First, so far, has been relatively quiet.
Don’t expect that to last with the likes of Stu Braddick getting ready to unravel the competition.
No matter how this plays out, the prize is huge.
The civic election is just over nine weeks away, on Saturday, Nov. 15.
Enjoy the show, and be thankful you’re not in the race. This one is going to get nasty.
